Growing up in a small north Queensland town, I was a skinny, bespectacled kid who loved to read books and comics were my escape from the schoolyard – in my imagination. I roamed the streets of Gotham with Batman and prowled the jungles with the Phantom!
Each character had a history of triumph over struggle and were just doing their best to make the world a better place. The symbolism in their costumes reflected their strengths and challenges and gave meaning to their lives.
Pop culture is filled with archetypes of heroes – and villains! When we dress up, we give ourselves permission to play.
